Meaning:

Joe's thoughts on the song: I wrote the song about a year ago when I was dating this very interesting girl. I was in New York for about a week working with Ken on some new material. I had been seeing her for about 6 months or so. About three days into the trip, I received a call from her telling me about her experiences with another guy, one of my best friends, while I had been gone. She had intended to impress me with her honesty.
Needless to say, I was not too impressed. It ruined the rest of the trip. Anyway, the verses are mainly references to him, and her, and me. The song is basically a huge extended metaphor, where I represent the "good" guy in the city, she represents his wife (surprise..), and what I had been calling love, represents God. The entire incident involving her and the other guy is the burning cities of Sodom and Gomorra.

To make a very very long story less long, she DID look back.
