Meaning:
Joe's thoughts on the song: Rise was co-written with Jason Morgan. It's one of the few kick-your-ass songs on Safe Unless. It's basically his baby, so i'm going to let HIM talk about it:
The verses are basically me telling my dad about the way that I felt, the emotions that I bore, the complete and utter confusion about the way that I was being treated, during the time that I lived with him. He was always talking about crossing lines and looking at myself in the mirror without ever telling me exactly why those lines were there or what i was looking for in the mirror. The chorus is my way of saying to my father and all of the people who were my friends when I decided to take up music (all of whom, my father included, thought it was a complete waste of time and energy, and made it a point to remind me almost daily), no matter what you say, no matter what you do, I will turn this into something. And to all those people: Hey, look at me now! :)-
**fun swim fact: Rise was tracked in ONE take. everything on the song was recorded on our first take, live and together, except the vocals.

You told me to take my questions
to the mirror I've lost
you told me to find my answers
at the line i crossed
my source of strength
is a dream i'd never compromise
now the emptiness subsides

unforgiven promises
all the unfound wishes
countless times you've held me down

kept me down
but I will rise

never compromise
unforgiven promises
all the unfound wishes

I will rise.
